Master of Surgery (MS) in Otorhinolaryngology, popularly known as MS in ENT, is a 3-year postgraduate medical course specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of the head and neck, ear, nose and throat. ENT specialists are plastic and reconstructive surgeons, as well as cataract, sinus, and cleft palate surgeons. ENT specialists treat hearing loss and sinus problems, voice disturbances, obstructive sleep apnea, and airway blockages. They also deal with infections, head and neck tumours, thyroid and parathyroid cancers, and facial trauma.
As a fundamental surgical component, Otorhinolaryngology incorporates medical, diagnostic and therapeutic services of the head and neck region. With increasing pollution, allergies, sinusitis, noise exposure, infections, lifestyle changes, and urban climatic conditions, the need for expert ENT specialists continues to escalate in India. Through the development of new endoscopic, cochlear implantation, laser and robotic procedures, there is an increasing array of health care needs that the field can potentially meet, making MS ENT one of the most sought-after postgraduate specialities.
The MS Otorhinolaryngology course covers integrated training in otology, rhinology, laryngology, head and neck surgery, pediatric ENT diseases, audiology and communication disorders, and skull base surgery. Students are well-exposed to diagnostic tools like endoscopy, laryngoscopy, audiometry, otomicroscopy, nasopharyngoscopy and imaging. They are also taught different surgical procedures such as tympanoplasty, mastoidectomy, septoplasty, tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy, tracheostomy, thyroidectomy, neck dissection and tumour resection.
Graduates can find positions in ENT OPDs, emergency wards, operation theatres, audiology labs, and head & neck oncology units. Students are involved in case presentations, journal clubs, research, surgical demonstrations and multi-disciplinary discussions, including interaction with neurosurgery, pulmonology, oncology, ophthalmology, and plastic surgery.
ENT super-speciality hospitals, hearing clinics, allergy centres, sleep study centres, head & neck oncology institutes, etc, have seen a dramatic rise in cities like Bangalore, Chennai, Hyderabad, Mumbai and Delhi. Specifically, Bangalore has a lot of clinical exposure and job opportunities as it has many multi-speciality hospitals and state-of-the-art surgical centres.
Career options for graduates of MS ENT include a career in clinical practice, surgery, research, audiology-based management, voice and swallowing retraining, and head and neck oncology. Post-doctoral training, such as MCh Head and Neck Surgery, fellowships in otology, rhinology, voice surgery, facial plastic surgery, cochlear implant surgeries and sleep medicine, may also be pursued by the specialists.
Despite the popularity of other medical fields in India, MS ENT is still preferred by medical aspirants because of its surgical nature, scope, predictable working hours, and a sound private practice. In fact, many ENT specialists set up their own surgeries or recurrent centres for the provision of a variety of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
