Established in 2008, NITTE (Deemed to be University) is highly rated by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India, University Grants Commission (UGC), National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC), National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) and other professional regulatory councils in India. 


The university provides clinical resources to train health professionals and teaching hospitals. There are student exchange programmes with well known and prestigious universities in Japan and the USA. 


The university has established 31 institutions that are spread across three campuses. The colleges affiliated to NITTE (Deemed to be University) are in Mangalore and Bangalore. The Government of India gave the status of Deemed-To-Be university to NITTE in 2008 (June).
