MD Emergency Medicine Overview

Doctor of Medicine (MD) in Emergency Medicine is a 3-year full-time postgraduate medical course, the minimum eligibility is a bachelor degree from a recognized college or university or equivalent. It is one of the most rapidly growing and important specialties in contemporary medicine, particularly with the rising number of urgent cases due to emergency conditions, trauma scenes, myocardial infarctions (heart attacks) strokes and infectious diseases emerging all over Europe.

Professionally they work in stabilizing the patients who are acutely ill or suffer from acute injuries, poisoning, shock, respiratory failures, cardiac arrests, neurological disorders and other life threatening emergencies, accidents and burns. The MD Emergency Medicine programme trains physicians to diagnose, manage and treat patients seeking immediate medical care in all EDs, intensive care units and trauma centers.

This specialty comprises practical methods in airway management, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), pediatric emergencies, trauma resuscitation, toxicology disaster response, emergency ultrasound, rapid sequence intubation and the numerous technical skills required for critical care. They also have the experience of triaging, rapid decision-making under stress and performance of emergent procedures including intubation and mechanical ventilation, central venous access, defibrillation, focused abdominal study sonography for trauma (FAST) scan, emergency thoracotomy and ATLS.
