Mount Carmel traces its origins to 1944, when it was founded as the first women’s college in Thrissur, Kerala. After 4 years in 1948, it moved to Bangalore and was set up as Mount Carmel College. Owned and administered by the Carmelite Sisters of St. Teresa, the institution was established with the mission of empowering women through education, a founding principle that has shaped its identity for nearly a century and a half.
For over 75 years, Mount Carmel operated exclusively as a women's college, building a reputation as one of Bengaluru's most respected institutions for women's higher education. This began to shift in 2021, when the college admitted male students to its postgraduate courses, and by 2024 it had transitioned into a fully co-educational institution across all programmes. This evolution reflected a deliberate strategic move which is aligned with the institution's broader ambition of achieving university status while modernizing its academic offerings for a changing student demographic.
That ambition was realized in 2026 when Mount Carmel was granted Deemed-to-be University status, making it the world's first Carmelite multidisciplinary university owned and managed by the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Teresa. This marks a significant institutional milestone, elevating Mount Carmel from an autonomous college to a university with independent academic and administrative authority, a status that allows it to design its own curricula, launch new programmes, and set academic policy without external affiliation constraints.
The institution's standing is reinforced by consistent academic recognition. Mount Carmel has been ranked India's #1 private autonomous college in the EW India Higher Education Rankings 2026-27, alongside a NIRF 2025 ranking in the 151–200 band, AICTE approval, and NAAC A+ accreditation.
Its academic footprint spans arts, science, commerce, management, media, and technology, organized under four major schools including the School of Natural and Applied Sciences, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the School of Commerce, encompassing a total of 76 programmes across undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral levels.
