The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has announced a major change in its assessment methodology for Class 10 and 12 board exams. Students will no longer receive divisions or distinction awards from CBSE board, instead their performance in each subject will be the main focus.
The Board emphasized that it does not calculate, declare, or inform the percentage of marks. The admitting institution or employer will be responsible for any percentage calculations needed for employment or higher education. The admitting institution must also ascertain the best five subjects for students who took more than five subjects for the purpose of calculation of marks.
When announcing the results of the Class 10 and 12 board exams in 2023, the CBSE made the decision not to publish the merit list. The board had not disclosed the toppers in class 10 and 12 board exams.
The recent decision by the CBSE board to stop awarding divisions or distinctions is a positive development and an important step towards implementing National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. This decision is seen as a move that will reduce students' academic burden, promote holistic education and address the impact of exams on mental health issues.
