
St. Aloysius College, now known as St. Aloysius Deemed-to-be-University is in Mangalore, Karnataka. Founded in 1880, St. Aloysius University is part of a global network of educational institutions that are managed by the members of the ‘Society of Jesus’ also known as Jesuits. This religious organisation administers colleges, universities and schools in more than 105 countries worldwide.
The university aims to educate all societal segments regardless of caste, colour, or creed. St. Aloysius University’s motto ‘Lucet et Ardet’ which translates to ‘Shine to Enkindle’ is inculcated to encourage students to become well-established individuals in society.
In 1980, the then President of India, Shri Neelam Sanjeeva Reddy, was invited to be the chief guest for the erstwhile colleges’ centenary celebration at St. Aloysius University. In addition to this, Dr. APJ. Abdul Kalam, former President of India, inaugurated the Information Technology Block of the university in 2002.
With an aim to be NAAC accredited, St. Aloysious Deemed-to-be-University participated in its first NAAC accreditation assessment cycle in 2005, at which it procured a score of 86.7%. The university's growth after it gained autonomy in 2007 and the procurement of great results in the next two NAAC accreditation cycles aided the university in securing a NAAC ‘A’ Grade in 2015. Moreover, the recent participation of the university in the fourth Cycle of the NAAC Accreditation assisted the university in acquiring a CGPA of 3.67 out of 4 thereby obtaining an ‘A++’ grade in January of 2023.

The Department of Physical Sciences offers a wide range of UG, PG and research programmes. The curriculum under these programmes is taught through a blend of theoretical and practical applications of several core and elective topics under the disciplines of Physics, Chemistry, Environmental Science and Material Science. The recent introduction of specialised programmes such as Applied Physics, Green Chemistry and Nanotechnology has also helped in the overall development of academia and research at St. Aloysious Deemed University.
The particular School of Study consists of a curriculum that aims to give students a comprehensive understanding of various topics within the discipline of Biology such as Botany, Zoology, Microbiology, Biotechnology, and Environmental Science. The department affiliated with this school provides guidance for students to conduct research at state-of-the-art laboratories. The introduction of specialised programmes such as Applied Biotechnology, Environmental Management, and Health sciences helps students to learn about the present biological prospects.
The School of Information and Technology accommodates about 500 students in the UG and PG courses. These programmes are segregated between 9 departments. I.e. BCA, B.Sc. Computer Science, B.Sc. Computer Animation, B.Sc. Data Analytics, MCA, M.Sc. Software Technology, M.Sc. Bioinformatics, M.Sc. Data Science, M.Sc. Big Data Analytics. In addition to this, certain PhD programs are offered by five of the PG departments. The school offers more than 40 faculty members who hold experience in helping students learn about computer networks, deep learning, AI, cloud computing, natural language processing, image processing, etc.
The school was established in 1883 with a single purpose to nurture and inculcate students with the methods that can help understand human expressions and interpretations.
The School of Commerce consists of a Department of Commerce that was established in 1944. The school offers UG, PG and Research programmes under its wing and the curriculum within these programmes includes topics such as Accounting, Finance, Taxation, Banking, HR, Marketing, Business Law, Computer Applications, and Business Analytics. The school also takes an integrated approach by offering professional studies such as ACCA, CA, Business Analytics, and embedded apprenticeship programmes with B.Com. Currently, the school houses 2,300 UG and 180 PG students under the guidance of around 55 teaching faculty members.
The commencement of the School of Business and Management in 1990 started with the introduction of the BBA Programme. The curriculum of the BBA course offers in-depth knowledge about various Business Management features such as management, communication, leadership, and entrepreneurial skills. This particular School of Study established the Post Graduate Department of Business Administration in 2004 with the intent to offer MBA, PGDBM and PhD programmes to fellow aspirants.
This school accommodates a wide variety of UG, PG and research programmes that concentrate on various aspects of Language, Literature, Linguistics and Cultural studies. This includes a comprehensive understanding of topics such as Language acquisition, Cross-cultural Communication, Translation, and the impact of culture on society. Additionally, the school also offers specialisedprogrammes to address modern global issues such as Intercultural Communication, Translation studies, and Language teaching methodologies which are developed through workshops, internships, etc.
The School of Vocational Studies was started in 2015 under the scheme of skills development-based higher education that was launched by the UGC. This School of Study consists of a B.Voc course and the specialisations under this course include Retail and Logistics Management, Animation & Multimedia, Software Development and Renewable Energy, and Sports Management Therapy & Nutrition. Moreover, the curriculum of the course under this School of Study consists of 40% general education (Theory) and 60% vocational training (practical).
Aloysius Prakshana
The publication unit of St Aloysius (Deemed-to-be) University in Mangalore, "St Aloysius Prakashana," was inaugurated on October 7, 2021, at Joseph Willy Hall in the Maffei Block of the college. The unit was established to emphasise on publishing work related to Literature, Academics, Recreation, and Research. The publication unit appreciates original work in any language that provides insights on issues of the particular coastal region.
Library
The library at St. Aloysius Deemed University was established 142 years ago. Currently, the library accumulates around 25,000 books. The strong points in this collection are English Literature, Kannada Literature and History books. The collection also includes volumes of publications such as Readers Digest and National Geographic from the 1940s. The library is classified into certain classes to meet the needs of the respective centres. They are; PG-Library for Postgraduate courses, AIMIT Library, Konkani Institute Library, and Institute of Civil Services Library.
Auditorium
St. Aloysius University auditorium consists of 5 blocks namely, Maffei Block, Admin Block, LCRI Block, Arrupe Block, and Xavier Block. Each of the first 4 blocks consists of halls that are well structured to meet the cultural and academic demands of the faculty and students. The names of these halls are as follows;

Laboratories
With an aim to focus on the practical application of the School of Study, every department at St. Aloysius Deemed University consists of subject-specific labs. They are;
Theatre-Ranga Adhyana Kendra:
The Centre of Theatre Studies was established to provide students a place to showcase their skills stimulating their artistic side while aiding in instilling social responsibility and awareness. Through this centre, many plays were performed in the LCRI Hall of the university.
Amicable Hostel Facilities:
The Aloysius University hostels are divided into an All-Male Dormitory and an All-Female Dormitory. These hostels are located at both the Main Campus and the AIMIT Campus. The facilities offered within the hostels include well-furnished rooms, veg and non-veg Mess Halls, purified drinking water, a generator facility for power back-up, a common study hall, mentoring and counselling, a prayer hall, a common announcement system, and CCTV Surveillance. In addition to this, 50% of the hostel seats are reserved for socially and economically weaker sections.
Gym & Sports
St. Aloysius University promotes an active sports culture by offering amenities that are needed to participate in various sports such as Cricket, Football, Swimming, Hockey, Kabaddi, Chess, Carrom and many more. The incentives offered to students who are part of the college sports team include admissions through sports quota, meal services, Sports attire, T.A. and D.A. during college tournaments, attendance for participating students, and scholarships for national and international representations. Along with this, the university also offers gym facilities to students provided they meet the mentioned criteria.
Swimming Pool
The Olympic-sized St. Aloysius swimming pool can accommodate large events involving facilities of national and international level. The main pool measures 50 meters in length and 25 meters in width. The pool is also equipped with an ozone purification plant, a gallery, changing rooms, and a parking area.
Museum
St. Aloysius Deemed University’s Museum, aka ‘Aloyseum’ was established in 1913. In its initial days, the museum was home to a collection of minerals, herbarium and ancient Roman coins that were offered as a gift by the Collegio Vieta, Italy. At present, the museum consists of ancient relics from around the world such as a Neolithic stone axe, pieces of the Berlin wall, a collection of lamps, African artefacts, mineral specimens and fossils, stamps, currency of various countries and many more.
