The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) published the list of top institutes for the year 2024 in all categories earlier this week. The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Madras maintains its stellar performance, by ranking at the top position in the Engineering and Overall categories for the ninth and sixth consecutive years respectively.
This year, three new categories have been added, Open Universities, Skill Universities, and State Public Universities.
The institutions were evaluated based on the five parameters set by the Ministry of Education: Outreach & Inclusivity, Graduation Outcomes, Teaching, Learning & Resources, Research & Professional Practices, and Perception.
Additionally, the evaluation standards were modified for this year. Medical Institutes must now have a faculty-to-students ratio of 1:10 instead of 1:15, whereas State Public/Government Universities must have a ratio of 1:20 instead of 1:15.
As of 2024, the higher educational institutes are listed under 16 categories - Overall, Universities, Medical, Engineering, Management, Law, Architecture & Planning, Colleges, Research Institutions, Pharmacy, Dental, Agriculture & Allied Sectors, Innovation, State Public Universities, Open Universities, and Skill Universities.
This framework seeks to encourage universities and colleges to uplift the overall quality of higher education. Thereby, enhancing the general standard for higher education in India.
