The Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute started as a private Medical college in 1955 by the Mysore Education Society. The Founders of this Society were Dr. R. Shivaram, Dr. Mekhri, Dr. B.K. Narayana Rao and Dr. B.V. Ramaswamy. In 1957 it was handed over to the then Government of Mysore and was affiliated to Mysore University and then on to Bangalore University. In 1996 it became affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences.
The Institute is involved in community health services at the Urban Family Welfare center, Siddaiah Road and Primary Health Centers at Sondekoppa, K G Halli, Hesaraghatta and Pavagada.
Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute - Allied Health Department provides a number of B.Sc courses to train and educate students in the vast field of Allied Health Sciences. It is affiliated to Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, and is approved by the Medical Council of India (MCI).
Scholarships are subject to central/state government and college rules.
Admission is based on merit and eligibility criteria.
Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute Allied Health Department provides state-of-the-art infrastructure for students to prosper in the field of Allied health Sciences The Alumni Association has constructed a Digital Library and Seminar Hall. The Seminar Hall has been constructed with the latest equipment for Tele-teaching. A Tele-medicine unit in collaboration with ISRO was started on the eve of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations. Bangalore Medical College and Research Institute is the first Government Medical College to provide this facility in the state of Karnataka. The college also has a central library stocked with several standard books and subscribes to over 120 journals (Foreign and Indian) each year.

Separate hostel facilities are provided to boys and girls separately with study rooms, guest rooms and gymnasium additionally attached to dorms.
Allied health professionals are involved with the delivery of health or related services pertaining to the identification, evaluation, and prevention of diseases and disorders; dietary and nutrition services; rehabilitation and health systems management.
Four major hospitals are attached to this institution, namely: Victoria Hospital, Vani Vilas Women and Children’s Hospital, Minto Ophthalmic Hospital and Bowring and Lady Curzon Hospital
