Students Coming from Bihar to Bangalore

Bangalore, the education hub of India, offers more than just pleasant weather to its inhabitants. The city is on the verge of making itself a megacity. It is the third-most populous city and the fifth-most populous urban agglomeration of the country. The city is also referred to as the “Silicon Valley of India” or “IT capital of India” because of its role as the leading information technology export of the country.

The city has a significant number of educational and research institutions. This factor has played a huge role in the skill development of students from all over the world. Therefore, many students from different parts of the country move to Bangalore in the hope of being the best version of themselves.

Students from Bihar:

Bihar was a major centre of learning and home to universities like Nalanda (one of the earliest universities of India) and Vikramashila during the medieval period. However, it lost its name when the invaders destroyed these centres of learning. Nowadays, the younger generation of the Bihar state is growing up without quality education and inadequate education infrastructure.

There are only 32.57% of the population enrolled in school and only 44.07% of students who are making the transition from secondary to higher secondary. According to a TOI blog, The state also has 1,25,00,000 youth, aged between 18-23 years, who will enter the job market without good quality education.

Although the literacy rate of Bihar has significantly increased as per the 2011 census, from 47% in 2001 to 63.8% in 2011, Bihar is the least literate state in India. The country’s literacy rate is 74.04%. Therefore, it is evident that Bihar has a literacy rate of below average. Moreover, the state’s dropout rate is about 70% between grades 1 to 10. Therefore, it has a low enrollment at the college level.

Why Bangalore for Bihari Students?

According to the AISHE 2017-18 report, Bihar has only 23 universities across the state for 666 colleges. The state has only 7 colleges for every lakh population, with an average enrolment of 2,142 in one college.

Out of the total number of the younger population in the country, the state has only 1,78,833 students enrolled in colleges and universities. Due to the lack of opportunity in the state of Bihar, the students are migrating to states like Karnataka for higher education. It was also found in a study by the Journal of the European Economic Association that 37.8% of Bihar teachers were not found in the schools during an unannounced visit. It has the worst teacher absence rate in India.

Given below are the main reasons why students are coming to Bangalore, Karnataka for higher studies:

  • College Density: While Bihar has 7 colleges per lakh population, Karnataka has 51 colleges per lakh population.
  • Medical and related courses: Karnataka has the top medical and nursing colleges apart from the facilities provided by the college. • Number of Colleges: Karnataka has a total of 3,429 colleges, whereas Bihar has only 666 colleges.
