The Union Government informed the Supreme Court of India that the counselling for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET) - MDS 2021 will be carried out virtually within four weeks. The counselling will be held as per the existing reservation policy.
The counselling date was delayed due to the clarification which was sought from the top court regarding OBC reservation in the All India Quota (AIQ). AIQ seats are contributed by the state medical colleges under the AIQ scheme.
The centre was slammed by the Supreme Court over the delay in the dates for the NEET-MDS.
A bench comprising Justices D Y Chandrachud and M R Shah had issued notices to the Centre and others including the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC) on July 2nd, 2021 regarding the plea of 9 BDS doctors, granted 1 week to the government for filing an affidavit.
The Supreme Court said that the government is wasting lives of the doctors which is a loss to the country.
Through a video conference, the bench asked why there was no counselling held for the candidates since last year. They stated that it is a loss to the country because the committee is not providing students with their degree by not conducting the counselling since a year.
The Court further asked the committee to inform within a week on when it is holding the counselling session.
The BDS degree candidates had appeared for the NEET (MDS) exam on December 16th, 2020 by the National Board of Examination (NBE) for admission to the Master in Dental Surgery (MDS) course.
