Top 20 MBA Entrance Exams in India for 2021

Students who aspire to study MBA must start early preparation for the top 20 MBA entrance exams in India for 2021. If they start early preparations, they will have the chance to get admissions in any one of the top MBA colleges in India. 

However, in order to prepare for the entrance exams, students must have a clear idea about different types of exams. The entrance exams for MBA are conducted at three levels as follows:

  • National Level
  • State Level
  • Institutional Level

However, irrespective of their level, most of the entrance exams are tough and require thorough preparation. Given below is a list of top 20 MBA entrance exams in India for 2021:

Common Admission Test (CAT):

The Common Admission Test or CAT is the most widely accepted entrance exam in the list of top 20 MBA entrance exams in India. More than 1400 institutes and 20 IIMs accept CAT score during admission. Every year, more than 2,00,000 students appear for the CAT exam. 

The Indian Institute of Management is the conducting body of CAT. CAT is a computer-based standardized test, and students need to answer 100 questions within 3 hours. Every wrong answer gets negative points in the exam. CAT is usually held in the month of November or December every year. It consists of three sections as shown below

  • Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension
  • Quantitative Aptitude
  • Data Interpretation and Logical Reasoning

Management Aptitude Test (MAT):

Management Aptitude Test or MAT is also a common MBA entrance exam conducted at the national level by the All India Management Association (AIMA). It is held both in online and offline mode four times a year, usually in the months of February, May, September, and December. 

The scores of the MAT exam are accepted by more than 600 institutes all over India. Students must answer 200 questions within 150 minutes. Students must answer carefully as every wrong answer gets a negative marking. The questions of the MAT exams test the following areas:

  • Language Comprehension
  • Mathematical Skills
  • Data Analysis and Sufficiency
  • Intelligence and Critical Reasoning
  • Indian and Global Environment

Common Management Admission Test (CMAT): 

The Common Management Admission Test or CMAT is the second-largest entrance exam for MBA aspirants. The scores of CMAT are accepted by more than 1000 management institutions in India. Therefore, it is one of the best exams among the top 20 entrance exams for MBA.

The CMAT exam was launched by AICTE in the year 2012. The exam was conducted twice a year until 2015. However, after 2015, the exam is being conducted only once a year in the month of January. More than 1,50,000 students appear for the CMAT exam every year. The paper pattern of CMAT consists of the following sections:

  • Language Comprehension
  • Quantitative Technique
  • Logical Reasoning
  • General Awareness

Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT):

The Graduate Management Admission Test or GMAT is a computer-based standardized test conducted at the international level. The duration of the exam is 3 hours and 7 minutes. The exam was started by the Graduate Management Admission Council almost 67 years ago in the year 1953. 

The scores of GMAT are valid until five years, and it is conducted multiple times in a year. The GMAT test scores are accepted by more than 2000 management schools worldwide. However, the registration fee for GMAT is very high. The GMAT tests the following areas of the students:

  • Verbal reasoning
  • Quantitative reasoning
  • Integrated reasoning
  • Analytical writing

Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT):

The Xavier Aptitude Test (XAT) is conducted by the Xavier School of Management at the national level. It is usually conducted in the month of January, and more than 75,000 candidates appear for the exam. Around 600 colleges participate in the XAT exam

The duration of the exam is around 3 hours, during which the students must answer 100 questions. The exam does not have any sectional time limit, and it does not have a negative marking scheme for the wrong answers. It consists of four sections, namely:

  • Verbal and Logical Ability
  • Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation
  • Decision-Making Ability
  • General Knowledge 

Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT) Exam:

The National Testing Agency (NTA) conducts the IIFT entrance exam once a year. It is a national level exam, and its scores are valid for admission only to the Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT). It is usually conducted in the month of December in the online mode.

The exam consists of 200 questions which must be answered in just 2 hours. The exam has no age limit for the students who want to appear for the exam. Around 60,000 candidates appear for the exam every year. IIFT tests the following area of the candidates:

  • English Comprehension
  • Quantitative Analysis
  • Logical Reasoning
  • General Knowledge & Awareness

AIMS Test for Management Admissions (ATMA):

The AIMS Test for Management Admissions is also one of the top exams in the list of MBA entrance exams in India for 2021. ATMA is a national level exam, and its scores are accepted by more than 500 management institutes. 

The exam is conducted four times a year in the months of February, May, July, and August. The students appearing for the exam need to answer 180 questions within 3 hours. Every incorrect answer gets a negative 0.25 marks. The ATMA exam consists of the following sections:

  • Verbal Skills - I
  • Verbal Skills - II
  • Quantitative Skills - I
  • Quantitative Skills - II
  • Analytical Reasoning Skills - I
  • Analytical Reasoning Skills - II

MICA Admissions Test (MICAT):

MICA Admissions Test or MICAT is a mandatory test for students who want to get admission into the MICA institute. In order to be eligible for the MICAT exam, students must qualify in any one national exam, like CAT, XAT, or GMAT. 

More than 3000 students appear for the MICAT exam every year. Due to its tough competitiveness, MICAT is one of the top 20 MBA entrance exams in India for 2021. The duration of the exam is 2 hours and 50 minutes, during which students must answer 105 questions. The exam consists of three sections, as shown below:

  • Section - I: Descriptive Test
  • Section - II: Verbal Ability (VA), Quantitative Ability (QA), Divergent-Convergent Reasoning (DCR), and General Awareness (GA)
  • Section - III: Psychometric Test

ICFAI Business School Aptitude Test (IBSAT):

ICFAI Business School Aptitude Test (IBSAT) is held by the ICFAI Foundation for Higher Education every year. The test scores of IBSAT are valid for admission into any one of the nine campuses of ICFAI Business School. 

IBSAT is an institute level entrance test conducted in an online mode. It has 140 questions which must be answered within 2 hours. Due to the high quality of education provided at IBS campuses, IBSAT is one of the top 20 entrance exams for MBA, and more than 25,000 students appear for it every year. The exam consists of the following sections:

  • Quantitative Aptitude
  • Data Adequacy & Data Interpretation
  • Verbal Ability
  • Reading Comprehension

Telangana State Integrated Common Entrance Test (TSICET):

The Telangana State Integrated Common Entrance Test (TSICET) is a state-level MBA entrance exam conducted in the state of Telangana. The test scores of the exam are accepted by the institutes of only Telangana state. 

More than 70,000 students appear for the exam every year, and over 250 colleges accept the test scores of TSICET. Even though the exam is conducted at the state level, it has very high competition. Therefore, it is included in the list of top 20 entrance exams in India. The students are tested in the following areas during the exam:

  • Communication Ability
  • Analytical Ability
  • Mathematical Ability

Karnataka Management Aptitude Test (KMAT):

Karnataka Management Aptitude Test (KMAT) is a state-level MBA entrance exam conducted by the Karnataka Private Post Graduate Colleges Association (KPPGCA). More than 9000 students appear for the exam, and the test score of KMAT is valid in 169 MBA colleges in Karnataka. 

The KPPGCA conducts the exam thrice in a year in the months of May, July, and September. The duration of the exam is 2 hours, and it has 120 questions in total. The paper of KMAT has the following sections:

  • Language Comprehension
  • Basic Aptitude
  • Mathematical Skills

NMIMS Management Aptitude Test (NMAT):

The NMIMS Management Aptitude Test (NMAT) has 120 MCQs, which must be answered in 2 hours. NMAT is a popular entrance exam in India and is conducted by GMAC. 

Students can take the exam thrice in a year, and the best score among those three will be selected for admissions. Around 50,000 students appear for NMAT, and more than 30 institutions in India and around 19 institutions in the foreign countries accept NMAT scores. The NMAT exam tests the aptitude of students in the following sections:

  • Language Skills
  • Logical Reasoning
  • Quantitative Skills

Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test (TANCET):

Tamil Nadu Common Entrance Test (TANCET) is a state-level common entrance exam in Tamil Nadu. The exam is conducted by the Anna University in Chennai on behalf of the state government. The test scores of TANCET are used not only for MBA but also for other postgraduate courses. 

The exam has 100 questions in total. It is held for a duration of two hours. The exam is usually conducted in the month of March every year. It has the following sections:

  • English Usage
  • Reading Comprehension
  • Quantitative Ability
  • Data Sufficiency
  • Analysis of Business Situations

Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (MAHCET):

Maharashtra Common Entrance Test (MAHCET) is a state-level MBA entrance exam in Maharashtra. It is usually held in the month of March, and more than 11,000 students appear for the exam every year. 

The exam has 200 questions and a time limit of 2 hours and 30 minutes. Around 300 colleges accept the test scores of Maharashtra Common Entrance Test for admission to their institute. The MAHCET exam consists of the following sections:

  • Verbal Ability and Reading Comprehension
  • Logical / Abstract Reasoning
  • Quantitative Aptitude

Symbiosis National Aptitude Test (SNAP):

Symbiosis National Aptitude Test or SNAP is a national level MBA entrance test conducted in the online mode. Symbiosis International University is the conducting body of the SNAP test. 

SNAP test is one of the most popular tests in the list of top 20 entrance exams for MBA in India. Around 50,000 students appear for the SNAP test every year in the month of December. The test scores are primarily used by 15 institutes under Symbiosis International University. Even a few other institutes accept the test scores of SNAP for admissions. The SNAP test consists of the following sections:

  • General English
  • Analytical & Logical Reasoning
  • Quantitative, Data Interpretation & Data Sufficiency

Odisha Joint Entrance Examination (OJEE):

Odisha Joint Entrance Examination (OJEE) is an MBA entrance exam conducted by the government of Odisha. The OJEE test is a common test for different postgraduate courses like MCA, M.Tech along with an MBA.

Every year, more than 3 lakh students appear for the exam. The exam is usually conducted in the month of either April or May. OJEE is held in the online mode, and it has 120 questions. The duration of the exam is 2 hours. The OJEE has the following sections in the exam:

  • Verbal reasoning
  • Comprehension
  • Analytical reasoning
  • Computer and Business fundamentals
  • General Knowledge

Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology Entrance Examination (KIITEE):

The Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology Entrance Examination (KIITEE) is conducted by the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) University. It is conducted in the month of January for various undergraduate and postgraduate courses along with an MBA. 

The competitiveness for the KIITEE test is very high, and therefore, it is included in the list of entrance exams for MBA in India. The exam has 150 questions which must be answered within a time limit of 150 minutes. The candidates are tested in the following sections during the exam:

  • English
  • Quantitative Aptitude
  • Analytical Reasoning
  • Issue of Social concern
  • General Knowledge

Himachal Pradesh University Management Aptitude Test (HPUMAT):

Himachal Pradesh University Management Aptitude Test (HPUMAT) is an MBA entrance exam conducted in Himachal Pradesh at the state-level. The test scores of HPUMAT are accepted only in the state of Himachal Pradesh. 

The HPUMAT exam has 200 questions and a time limit of 2 hours. Every year, more than 17,000 students appear for the exam. The exam consists of four sections, as shown below:

  • English Comprehension
  • Arithmetic Comprehension & Data Interpretation
  • Reasoning
  • Business Environment

Andhra Pradesh Integrated Common Entrance Test (APICET):

Andhra Pradesh Integrated Common Entrance Test is an MBA entrance exam in Andhra Pradesh conducted at the state level by Shri Venkateshwara University. The exam is conducted in English as well as Telugu which is the state language of Andhra Pradesh. Students can choose to write the exam in their desired language. 

Since the APICET exam has high competition and more than 75,000 students appear for the exam every year, it is included in the list of MBA entrance exams in India for 2021. Around 321 colleges accept the scores of APICET in Andhra Pradesh. The exam consists of the following sections:

  • Communication
  • Mathematical Ability
  • Analytical Ability

Tata Institute of Social Sciences National Entrance Test (TISSNET):

Tata Institute of Social Sciences National Entrance Test is held by the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). It is an institute level exam, and its test scores are accepted only by TISS, which is a public research university. 

The exam duration is 100 minutes for 100 questions in total. Around 40,000 students appear for the exam every year. The TISSNET exam consists of the following sections:

  • Logical Reasoning
  • Analytical Ability
  • Social Sensitivity
  • Knowledge of Contemporary issues

Since the syllabus and the types of questions asked in these top MBA entrance exams for getting admissions in top b-schools in India are similar to each other, students can easily prepare for more than one exam at a time. 

Moreover, since the exams are conducted during different times of the year, there is no possibility of a lack of preparation time or overlapping of exam dates. Therefore, the students who aspire to study MBA in 2021 should start their preparation as soon as possible.
