READING COMPREHENSION FOR ANY COMPETITIVE EXAM DECODED

For a student who is preparing for any competitive examination, there are a lot of things that he/she has to prepare for and English or reading comprehension is the last thing that they prepare. Mostly, these reading comprehensions are unseen passages and most of the students feel that there is nothing to prepare in this section.

Reading comprehension sections are the most ignored section during the time of preparation.  But it is one section that is repeated in every competitive examination. It is one of the section that is repeated in examination since elementary schooling. This section is so popular because it is one of the best ways to check a student?s logical ability.

If you are preparing for any competitive examination, reading comprehension is a must for you. These are the few ways one can attempt this section without any difficulty.

Avoid using outside knowledge

Reading comprehension is a test that comprises of a passage which the student has to read well and answer the questions provided below it. The answers need to be from the passage itself and the student cannot use outside knowledge of the subject to get in the way of their writing the answers. The students must ensure that they are writing the answers analysing the paragraph given properly. You can also link the question to the answer and never provide any opinion in the answer.

Make logical choices

As the reading comprehension section is given in a competitive examination to check the student?s logical ability, you should never feel confused to use your logical ability while attempting this section. One of the most important things that a student should do while attempting this section is to give some time to write answers to the questions more logically and effectively. One way to answer the question more logically is to find the keywords in the questions and the passage. This will help you to get the answer faster and quicker without even minutely reading the whole passage.

Review your answer

Always keep some time to review your the answer you have written. It will help you find if you have made any mistakes. Most of the students face a problem in time management. Therefore, divide your time in a way that you have enough time to read, write and review the answers. It is better if you skim through the whole passage and all the questions before you start answering. Then you can find the keywords in the question and the passage so that you can find out which part of the passage you need to read thoroughly. Then write the answer based on the passage. At the end of the section review the answers properly to avoid any mistakes.

Read the passage properly

Whenever you are attempting a section make sure to read the passage where the answer is properly. This will help to ensure that you have not missed out on anything that is important for the answer. You can practise reading comprehension at home so that you know how to attempt this section with confidence during the time of the examination. Practise papers will have a lot of reading comprehension question which will help you to give an idea on your performance. It will also give you an idea of how well you can perform under pressure during an examination.

Read the instructions carefully

This is important for any section that you will write in an examination. Before you start writing the paper make sure that you read the instructions carefully so that you don?t miss out on anything important while writing the paper. The instruction may contain important details like how you should attempt the questions and answers in the section. Sometimes it is also possible that not all the questions are compulsory to answer. If you don?t read the instructions properly you can miss out on some valuable time during a competitive examination.

Go through all the question first

The students are advised to go through all the questions first and then start writing the answers. This will help you to find out the questions that are easy to answer. Then you can start writing the answers with those questions first. As reading comprehension is a section where the student is judged on their logical skills, the way they attempt the questions will also tell how logical they have been while attempting the question.

Finally, try and avoid using complex words while writing the answers. There might be some places where complex sentences are required like academic papers as these are the places where you will be judged based on your writing skills. However, it is not absolutely necessary to use a word in a sentence when you are not fully confident. Even in the academic world, the students are advised to use simple language whenever it is possible.
