Just start your preparation early and don?t lose sight in the process. Here?s all you need to know before you start your preparation for the biggest examination of your career.
Know the syllabus well
You need to know the complete syllabus in detail so that you know what you are expected to know. For JEE Main Paper 1 (B.Tech Examination), you need to study three subjects, Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics.
In Mathematics you need to learn the following chapters:
Sets, Relations and Functions
Complex Numbers and Quadratic Equations
Matrices and Determinants
Permutations and Combinations
Binomial Theorem and Its Simple Application
Sequences and Series
Limit, Continuity and Differentiability
Three Dimensional Geometry
Statistics and Probability
For Physics, you need to learn the following chapters:
Physics and Measurement
Laws of Motion
Work, Energy and Power
Properties of Solids and Liquids
Kinetic Theory of Gases
Oscillations and Waves
Magnetic Effects of Current and Magnetism
Electromagnetic Induction and Alternating Currents
Dual Nature of Matter and Radiation
Atoms and Nuclei
Chemistry has three sections:
Under Physical Chemistry, the students need to study the following chapters:
Basic concepts in Chemistry
States of Matter
Chemical Bonding and Molecular Structure
Redox Reactions and Electrochemistry
Under Inorganic Chemistry, the students need to study the following chapters:
Classification of Elements and Periodicity in Properties
General Principles and Processes of Isolation of Metals
Block Elements (Alkali and Alkaline Earth Metals)
Under Organic Chemistry, the students need to study the following chapters:
Purification and Characterisation of Organic Compounds
Some Basic Principles of Organic Chemistry
Organic Compounds Containing Halogens
Organic Compounds Containing Oxygen
Organic Compounds Containing Nitrogen
Chemistry in Everyday Life
Principles Related to Practical Chemistry
For students who are opting for B. Arch and B. Planning, they have to prepare for an Aptitude test with Mathematics.
You can find the complete syllabus pdf here.
Students who are opting for B. Arch need to give an offline Architectural Drawing examination whereas, the students who are opting for B. Planning need to opt for Planning Based Objective Type Exam along with Mathematics and Aptitude.
Make a list of Important Topics
You cannot spend the whole day studying the same chapter. Therefore, it?s better to make a list of important subjects by going through the old question papers. Here are the important topics you need to study for Physics based on the maximum weight given in the chapters.
Heat & Thermodynamics
SHM & Waves
For Mathematics, the following are the important topics that you absolutely need to cover:
Coordinate Geometry (3-D)
Matrix & Determinants
Matrix & Determinants
For Chemistry, don't miss out on the following topics at all:
Organic Chemistry-II [Alkyl Halide, Alcohol & Ether (Reaction Mechanism), Aromatic Compounds, Biomolecules, Carbohydrates, Amino Acids and Polymers, Carbonyl Compounds, Environmental chemistry, Grignard Reagent, Reduction, Oxidation & Hydrolysis]
Physical Chemistry-I [Atomic Structure & Nuclear Chemistry, Ionic Equilibrium, Mole Concept, Thermodynamics and Thermochemistry]
Physical Chemistry-II [Chemical Kinetics, Electrochemistry, Solid State, Solution & Colligative Properties, Surface Chemistry]
Inorganic Chemistry-I [Chemical Bonding, Periodic Table & Periodicity in Properties, S-Block]
Books that you can't miss reading
If you are preparing for JEE Mathematics, there is nothing better than NCERT. For most of the CBSE students, NCERT is the bible for Mathematics. As most of the questions in your 12th board examination are from the textbook.
Apart from that, these are the few books you need to absolutely get when you start preparing for the examination:
Concepts of Physics Vol I and II
Author: H.C. Verma
Fundamentals of Physics
Author: Halliday, Resnick and Walker
Problems in General Physics
Author: I.E. Irodov
Author: P. Bahadur
Author: J.D. Lee
Author: Paula Bruice Yurkanis
Author: Morrison and Boyd
Author: S. L. Loney
Author: Hall and Knight
Author: S. L. Loney
Problems in Calculus of One Variable
Author: I.A. Maron
For B.Arch students, these are the few books are quite helpful:
A Complete Self Study Guide for B.Arch Entrance Examination (English)
Author: P.K Mishra, Arihant Publications
Verbal & Non-Verbal Reasoning Book
Author: R.S. Aggarwal
Architecture Entrance Book
Author: P.K Mishra
Solving previous year question paper
There?s nothing better than solving the previous year question papers on your own. It helps you to understand the level of difficulty. It is important to know the questions that were asked previously in the exam because that will help you find out the repetitive questions.
Online mock test to test your knowledge
Finally, never underestimate the value of a mock test before the actual examination. Mock test online or otherwise will help you understand where you stand in the level of your preparation. You probably need to give a hundred mock tests before you are completely ready for the actual test.
Preparing for a competitive examination can be tough but don't worry. There are thousands of students studying for the same examination right now. Many more have already passed this phase and studying in their dream college. If you have consistently studied and done a good revision, then you can definitely score high.
