The Law Commission of India defines Legal Education or Law as a study that imparts the knowledge of certain principles and provisions of law that enables the students to enter the legal profession. 

One of the central and primary functions of legal education is to produce lawyers with a social vision.

Law, as a course, gained its significance and importance only after the post-independence period. 

Earlier, the Law program was offered for the duration of 3-years in some traditional universities where it can be pursued only after being graduated. Later, Law education in India was introduced for the duration of 5-years.

Aims of Legal Education in India:

Legal Education offered in India aims to provide the students with exposure to the constitution of India. 

The main aim of Legal Education in India is to improve the skills and competence for the creation and the maintenance of justice in society.

  • Legal education equips the students to solve legal problems faced by individuals or clients as well as to solve society's problems 
  • The curriculum ensures to be a centre where people can contribute to understanding the law and assures to participate in their personal growth and improvement
  • Legal education trains the students to understand and work with operative statutory rules and encouraged them with an adequate experience for instilling the learned rules
  • The training ensures for future development

Legal Education is a broad concept of education that injects a sense of equality or impartiality before the law among the aspiring candidates.

The Objective of Legal Education in India:

Types of Integrated Law Courses:

An Integrated Law course is a program that ensures to offer two traditional degrees associated with the law. 

Law program traditionally means pursuing an LLB Degree program from any law school, whereas integrated courses cultivate an opportunity to cover two programs under one academic program. 

As there are two programs involved, it is called an integrated curriculum. The course aims to deliver a professional who is industry ready and has maximum knowledge in the field of judiciary.

These integrated programs offered by various institutes in the country have the duration of 5-years. 

Difference between BA LLB, BBA LLB, and B.Com LLB:

What is BA LLB?

The Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Legislative Law (BA LLB) course is a professional integrated law degree. 

BA LLB (Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws) is a professional integrated law course suitable for students who want to become a lawyer, an advocate, a legal advisor, or want to make a career in law and judiciary. BA LLB course duration is 5 years.

What is BBA LLB?

Bachelor of Business Administration and Bachelor of Legislative Law (BA LLB) is an integrated law program offered for aspiring candidates who are trained in Business Administration as well as Law. 

The BBA LLB subjects consist of two interrelated subjects that include Business and Law as a part of the curriculum. BBA LLB course duration is 5 years.

What is B.Com LLB?

Bachelors of Commerce (B.Com) and Bachelor of Legislative Law (LLB) is a professional law program offered by the colleges and universities in India. 

Here, the aspirants are taught both Commerce and Law as a subject curriculum. Law is an interdisciplinary liberal arts program, whereas commerce is a business and finance-related program. B.Com LLB course duration is 5 years.


Who is Eligible for BA LLB?

The aspiring candidates are required to pass 10+2 or II PUC from any recognized board in India. 

The BA LLB eligibility criteria require the candidates to have obtained a minimum of at least 45% of total aggregate marks from any recognized board. 

The reserved candidates will have 5% relaxation in the minimum total aggregate to be obtained. 

The applying candidates for the BA LLB admissions must be more than 17 years of age while applying for the course at any university or institute in India. 

Who is Eligible for BBA LLB?

The aspiring candidates for the BBA LLB course must have completed their 10+2 or II PUC or equivalent program from any recognized board in India. 

The candidates must have completed the program with not less than 50% (45% in some universities or colleges) of total aggregate marks or an equivalent examination.

There is a 5% relaxation in the total aggregate percentage for the SC/ ST/ OBC candidates. There is no specific age limit for the candidates to apply for the BBA LLB admissions. 

The program is strictly based on the merit of the entrance examinations, and an interview may be conducted by the top law universities as well. 

Who is Eligible for B.Com LLB?

The B.Com LLB aspiring candidates are required to complete their 10+2 or II PUC or any equivalent examination from a recognized board. 

The candidates need to score a minimum of 45% to 50% (based on the university or college) of total aggregate marks in their previous examinations where there is 5% of relaxation for the other category candidates.  

The age limit for the applicants shall not be above the age of 20 years old in the case of general category candidates, and the age limit must be 22 years for the reserved category candidates.

Curriculum Differences:

These courses, even though they are being integrated with the Law stream, have differences in their syllabus, subjects, and course curriculum offered by the colleges and institutes in India.  

BA LLB Syllabus and Curriculum:

BA LLB syllabus includes the concepts of History, Economics, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology along with multiple law subjects like Civil Law, Criminal Law, Labour Law, Tax Law, Administrative Law, Corporate Law, Patent Law, and many more. 

BBA LLB Syllabus and Curriculum:

Business Administration subjects include Principles of Management, Financial Accounting, Computer Applications, Effective Communication, etc. along with different law curriculum including Law of Torts, Family Law, Constitutional Law, Property Law, Company Law, Administrative Law, Civil Law, Criminal Law, and many more.

B.Com LLB Syllabus and Curriculum:

B.Com LLB syllabus includes the concepts of Business Statistics, Business Communication, Auditing, Economics, along with law programs Law of Contract, Consumer Protection Law, Constitutional Law, Law of Crimes, Legal Language, Interpretation of Statutes, Constitutional Law, and many more.

Scope/ Job Prospects:

Like there are curriculum differences between BA LLB, BBA LLB, and B.Com LLB, there are also differences in job prospects or scope after the completion of these curriculum integrated with Law.
