South Korea as officially called as the Republic of Korea is a sovereign state located in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula. The name "Korea" is derived from Goryeo, a dynasty which ruled in the Middle Ages. Its neighbors are China to the west, Japan to the east, and North Korea to the north. South Korea lies in the north temperate zone with a predominantly mountainous terrain. The capital of the country is Seoul. The Korean language is related to Japanese and Mongolian.

The history ofSouth Koreaformally begins with the establishment of South Korea on 15 August 1948,. Korea usually called as "Land of the Morning Calm," is a land of opposites existing in unification with each other. Combination of ancient Oriental tradition with modern technology is very much noticed. As the country is speedily developing in terms of industry, trade, and commerce, we also can find traces of more than 5000 years history in their palaces, temples and city gates.

Predominantly a mountainous country in the east; in the west and south are many harbors on the mainland and offshore islands. Most of the larger rivers and forests are located in the west. The eastern coastline has many sandy beaches, while the western side consists mainly of mud flats and rocky shores.

South Korea tends to have a humid continental climate and a humid subtropical climate, Precipitation is heavy in summer. Winter experiences temperatures which are higher along the southern coast and considerably lower in the mountainous interior.


The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (often abbreviated into "the Ministry of Education") is responsible for South Korean education. In Korean culture, education is the key to success in life where competition is consequently very heated and fierce. To many Korean parents, the education of their children outweighs all other considerations, and they will make tremendous sacrifices to let their children get the best education possible.

The Korean education system consists of six years of primary school, three years of middle school, and then three years of high school. Pass outs from schools can join 4-year colleges or universities. Others go to 2-year junior colleges, while the rest enter the work field.

University is extremely popular in South Korea, with more than 300 higher education institutions, both private and public, throughout the country. It is an important factor in paving the way for success in a student's life. Admissions are taken on the basis of admission tests. The most prestigious universities in South Korea are Yonsei University and Seoul National University. Most students attend four-year university courses, and most of the larger institutions offer the possibility of attaining post-graduate degrees.
