Pondicherry, an earlier French colony of India, lies along the South East Coast of India. 160 kms from Chennai, this union territory is now called Puducherry with effect from 2006. This place is also affectionately known as Pondy or Pondi by people.It is also popular with the name of The French Riviera of the East. The vivacious sea beaches and resorts, the world famous Aurobindo Ashram, the exotic back waters, all makes this small town a place worth visiting. Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Hindi and English are widely spoken in the union territory. French is also heard in some parts because of the French colonial impact for a long period.

The streets of Pondicherry were designed based on the French grid pattern. It was similar to a chess board featuring perpendicular streets. Also, one unique charm of this place is Sri Aurobindo Ashram founded by Sri Aurobindo in 1926 and Auroville (10km from Pondicherry) for which visitors flock in large numbers to experience the spiritual flavor of the place.

The French and other foreign tourist find this city still it's very favourite because of its old connection with the city. Moreover, the clean and less polluted city has been attracting the attention of outsiders from ages. As far as the education sector of this city is concerned, it has served as one of the biggest educational hubs of South India.
