The smallest Union territory, Lakshadweep was formerly known as the Laccadive, Minicoy, and Amindivi Islands is situated off the South Western coast of India. The word Lakshadweep is derived from "Lakshadweepa", which means "one hundred thousand islands". The capital of the Union Territory is Kavaratti which is a famous tourist destination. This Union Territory of India comes under the jurisdiction of the Kerala High court. It is also the least populous island in India. The main Islands are Minicoy, Kavaratti, Amini and Agatti.

Lakshwadeep is made of 36 islands, out of which only ten are inhabited. The main religion followed is Muslim; however Hindus and Christians also stay in good number. The official language is Malayalam.

Lakshwadeep is known as the tropical paradise for the tall green coconut palms which offers a spectacular beauty turns it into one. The exotic flora and fauna amazes the tourists with its splendid beauty and divinity. Lakshwadeep is famous for its coral islands and is well known for its corals all over the world. The type of corals reefs found here are of Atolls type and all the islands are made of these atolls corals. Special boats with glass base are available for tourists to watch the coral and even sea diving is carried out for one to get the feel of it. The Lakshadweep Coral Islands are a result of accumulation of corals on a volcanic island on the surface of the great Indian Ocean. The volcanic island was submerged into the ocean millions of years ago.

Lakshwadeep has a topical climate. The climate is pleasing throughout the year. The tall coconut palms gives the place a soothing climate. Monsoon begins from June to September and has heavy rainfall and is not considered the best time to visit. During winters, the temperature ranges between twenty degree centigrade and thirty-two degree centigrade.

Lakshadweep islands welcome tourists round the year but monsoons should be generally avoided as there is heavy rainfall. Summer serves as the best time to visit the place when you actually can see the exotic sun bathed beaches, enjoy the clear blue sea and the corals.

The only ways of transportation available is by boat or helicopters.

Education previously was limited to teaching of Quran in schools which were attached to the mosques which were being given the name of called Madrassas. The people of this island were not so enlightened about modern education. No much efforts were made to implement education in serious ways till the later half of 19th century.

A unique system of combining education with religion was imparted which slowly broadened the scope of education. The first government school was opened at Amini on 15th January 1904. But still education sector has taken a back seat in the island. Students opt out of this place and go to other places for higher studies. High levels of unemployment issues among the educated youth. There are low employment opportunities in the private sector. Geographical location is one of major drawbacks of resulting in high amount of unemployment issues.Students preferred to go to Calicut to pursue their higher education. Otherwise many students come out of the place and go to places like Bangalore for higher studies.
