Students from Iraq

Iraq is officially known as the Republic of Iraq in Western Asia. Its capital is Baghdad.

Iraq was once seen as a model of education in the Arab world, despite the cruelty of its former administration. The Arabic saying, "The Egyptians write, the Lebanese publish, the Iraqis read" was very well justified by Iraq as it once has the highest literacy rates in the region. But today to the world's dismay, the country suffers a major setback in the field of education thus leaving up to one-quarter of Iraq's adults as illiterate.

Education in Iraq has suffered mainly due to the continuous political instability. Focus is given on basic survival instead of education. Years of economic instability starting from 1990 has shown a very grim and a troublesome period in the lives of many people settled there. Education in Iraq is in major crisis. Children are forced to leave school either to help their families or because of security problems the parents are afraid to send the girls to school. The enrolment of girls in schools and colleges are much lower.

The head of the Education Committee in the Iraqi parliament, Ala'a Makki, says that the root cause is the low teaching standards found in the higher education institutions from which the teachers graduate.
