Goa has shown tremendous improvement in the field of education sector. It is home to some of the best educational institutes in the nation. There is a record of almost 82% literacy according to the 2001 census report.

Most of the schools are affiliated to Goa state board. However, schools affiliated to one can also come across schools affiliated to the CBSE and ICSE board. English is the main medium of instruction at the schools in Goa. However, Konkani and Portuguese are also taught in several schools of the state.

Goa is the premier center of higher education. There are several medical and engineering colleges one can come across. Both private and government colleges run efficiently in the state. The Government of Goa considers education as the foundation for human development. It gives importance to the quality of education by keeping the teachers updated about the latest trends in educational tools and techniques.

Where Primary education has receives a lot of impetus from the government, higher education seems to have stagnated a bit. Higher education does not prepare the graduates for jobs. People opined about higher education in the country is that it is best to obtain the post graduate degree from outside the state if it can be afforded. Goa boasts of a high level of education awareness and literacy. While most education indicators point to Goa's relatively well developed primary education system, higher and technical education in Goa lags behind.

According to a CII report, several deficiencies were pointed out in Goa's education system. Goa lacks courses catering towards the need for technically qualified personnel for established industries such as mining, pharmacy etc.

"Quality of education imparted in most of the institutes in Goa is perceived to be poor and do no match up to standards offered in institutes of repute. This in turn results in poor quality of graduates and post-graduates and affects the sustainability for employment. Often students opting for higher education prefer to leave the state, either choosing colleges in the neigbhouring states, the rest of India or abroad," the CII report states.

However, with a growing number of graduates and post graduates entering the job market each year and with their aspirations of well paying jobs not being met, there is an urgent need to improve the overall quality of higher and technical education in the state. The report throws light on some issues in the system that need attention – faculty shortages, lack of adequately qualified and trained faculty, course content and curriculum not in sync with current needs, poor quality of infrastructure, and inadequate industry-academia linkages.

Goan children go to government aided primary and secondary schools rather than government schools where the quality of education is extremely poor.

The need of the hour is to strengthen the educational policies of the state by accentuating skill development and more of professional programs. This will help to restrain unemployment thus enlightening the quality of education. Bangalore has been seen a popular destination for students coming for higher studies.
