Students from Assam

Assam is a beautiful and diverse state with an incredible range of cultures and landscapes located in the northeast of India. It shares its borders in the North and East with the Kingdom of Bhutan and Arunachal Pradesh. Along the south lies Nagaland, Manipur and Mizoram. Meghalaya lies to her South-West, Bengal and Bangladesh to her West.

The national festival of Assam is the Bihu which is celebrated in three parts during a year with great pomp and grandeur by all Assamese, irrespective of caste, creed or religion. Bengali-speaking Hindus and Muslims represent the largest minorities, followed by Nepalis and populations from neighboring regions of India. The cultural life of Assam is interwoven with the activities of two important cultural and religious institutions: the satras (the seat of a religious head, the satradhikar) and the naamghar(the house of names or the prayer hall). The satras have been in existence for more than 400 years.

The Assamese also observe pan-Indian religious festivals such as Durga Puja, Dol-jatra or Fakuwa, Janmastami, and the Eids.

Another important aspect of the cultural life of the people of Assam, particularly the women, is weaving of fine silk and cotton cloths of various floral and other decorative designs.

Assam in terms of education still needs to improve in itself. There was a time when there was no separate University on Assam and the students were dependent on Calcutta University for their higher studies. As time passed and resentment among the students grew, they claimed for a Separate University. Their wish was fulfilled after a long struggle Gauhati University was incorporated by an act of 1947.

It is well known that low economic growth and widespread poverty get reflected in poor social indicators of development such as low levels of achievement in health and education.

States like Kerala, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Punjab and Haryana, which have relatively better socio-economic and education status. A high percentage of schools lack facilities such as all weather usable rooms, drinking water and separate toilets and common rooms for girls. The percentage of untrained teachers is also quite high.

The prevailing education system in Assam is full of defects as it falls to make any provision for imparting technically and commercial education. Huge number of matriculates, undergraduates and graduates are coming out every year leading to the increasing gap between employment opportunities and employment seekers in educated middle class. Professional guidance and training facilities are almost inadequate. Thus the scope of employment in Assam has restricted by the defective system of education in the State.

The system of education prevalent at present has to be changed thoroughly. The present too much literary educational system be replaced by technical and vocation system to make it production oriented.
