The Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Union Territory of India are a group of islands which is located at the meeting point of the Bay of Bengal and Andaman Sea. It comprises of 572 islands spread over an area of about 800 km. The capital of the territory is Andamanese town of Port Blair and the capital of Nicobar Islands is Car Nicobar. Andaman and Nicobar islands are universally known as the Emerald Isles. The one-time 'Kaala Paani' or the Cellular Jail has now been transformed into a museum and is among the most popular tourist destinations in India.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands are separated by the Ten Degree Channel.

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands is home to a number of aboriginal tribes. The main language of the islands is Nicobarese. Yet, official languages like Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu and English are even being widely used there.

Marco Polo gave the name of `the land of the head - hunters' to the beautiful islands. The islands were invaded by the Marathas in the late 17th century. The Nicobar Islands were captured by Britain in 1869 and were amalgamated with the Andaman Islands to form a single administrative unit in 1872. Japanese forces occupied the islands from 1942 until the end of World War in 1945, and control of the territory was transferred to India when it gained independence from Britain in 1947.

As the islands are surrounded by sea, it experiences a moderate temperature throughout the year and the best time to visit Andaman and Nicobar islands is the period in between the months of December and April.

The special festivals of particular groups include Durgapuja , Panguni Uthiram, Pongal and Onam. The Some of their main festivals include Shivratri, Janmastami, Holi, Diwali, Ramanavami, Idd, Christmas, Good Friday etc.

Education System in the islands

The school education of Andaman and Nicobar which forms the fundamental base of state education in Andaman and Nicobar Islands is highly funded and extensive. They reach to even the most inaccessible of the tribal areas. The department of education has left no stone unturned to attract the children towards the schools and thus boost up the education profile of the State. A number of vernacular schools a also a key feature and holds great importance in the improvement of the state education of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. Various Ashram schools have been established in the tribal areas to publicize education among the tribal masses of the islands. All children up to 14 years of age are given Free and compulsory education.

The colleges of Andaman and Nicobar were initially affiliated to the Rangoon University. However, the termination of Burma from India brought about a change in the structure of state education at Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The colleges subsequently became affiliated to the Calcutta University. Affiliation to colleges is given mostly by Pondicherry University and Madras University in few cases. Some Technical institutes and those offering polytechnic courses are nevertheless affiliated to the Delhi University. The Union Territory similarly has Indira Gandhi National Open University centers for distant learning programs in the island.

The islands do not vaunt of too many educational institutions. Lot of schools provide primary as well as secondary education. Few Organizations provide professional courses in technical, industrial and teacher's training.

The island has limited science and arts colleges and most of these are government owned.

Government is working hard to accomplish higher standards in the education sector in Andaman and Nicobar Islands. About four fifth of the population is literate which marks a great achievement in itself. Students interested in specialized courses such as medical, law and engineering need to move from the islands to the mainland.

Most of the schools in the islands are affiliated to C.B.S.E board. The educational institutions claim of excellent infrastructure. Education in Andaman and Nicobar is also reasonable compared to other localities.

With revolution in time and demand for more advanced and better studies, students from the island prefer to come of the conventional methods of education and search for new prospects. Students prefer places like Delhi and Bangalore for higher studies.

As a booming IT and Financial hub, Bangalore is considered quite expensive city in India. Nevertheless students live in reasonably cheap University hostels and youth hostels.
